Migrating mailbox and mail folders from VMS to unix
To change the mailbox from OpenVMS to unix environment:
- You need an username on the unix systems.
If you already have one, skip to step 3.
- If you don't have one, you can require it, using the apposite
AFS/Unix
Account Request form and wait for the notify of the username creation by the
Computing Service staff.
- Use the apposite Mailbox
registration form to set your mailbox on the the unix environment
(choosing uxcalc in the Node text box).
- Wait for the mailbox update.
Verify that the mailbox has been changed to uxcalc,
using the command getmboxinfo on the Computing Service systems.
- Set the automatic forwarding of the OpenVMS local mail:
where """ are three quote characters.
- You can refer to the Computing Service Documentation web page to configure the mail user agent
(netscape, outlook express) to manage your mails from lnf.infn.it domain.
- You can also access to your mails from outside lnf domain using
https://webmail.lnf.infn.it/.
After the mailbox change, you can wish to collect and store all your
OpenVMS mail folders on the unix environment too. It's possible to migrate
mail folders from OpenVMS to unix preserving the folder structure.
To do this you need the following requirement:

Enough disk quota on the unix environment to store all the mail
folders that you have already in the OpenVMS environment.
If all the requirements are satisfied, you can execute the following steps:

Log in the OpenVMS machine

Execute the pine command

Press s and then c
to go into the Config Setup

Move the cursor down to highlight folder-collections
-
Press a to add a folder
collection
-
Press [] "Square braket
opened and closed" and then <return>

Press a again to add another
folder collection
-
Press {imap.lnf.infn.it}mail/[]
and then <return>
-
Move the cursor down to highlight enable-aggregate-command-set
-
Press x to set that feature
(X must appear between the square brakets)

Move the cursor down to highlight save-will-not-delete
-
Press x to set that feature
(X must appear between the square brakets)

Press e to exit setup
-
Press q to quit pine
-
Press y
to confirm quit
You can now execute pine
again that could manage both local mail folders (OpenVMS environment) and
remote mail folders (unix environment).

Press l to see the folder
list
-
move the cursor down to select the text string [ Select
Here to See Expanded List ] below folder-collection
<[]>
(Local and press <return>

Now for each local folder you must:

Move the cursor to select the folder name and press
<return>

Press ; "semicolon"
to select the messages
-
Press a to select all the
messages of the folder
-
Press a to apply a command
to the selected messages

Press s to save the selected
messages
-
Insert a new remote folder name (it can be the same of the
local one) and press <return>
-
Insert username
and password
of the unix environment (when required - tipically only the first time)

Press y
to confirm the creation of the new folder and wait for the transfer completion.

Press l to see the folder
list
-
Press <return>
to see the local folder list again and recycle this loop for a new folder
name till the last folder
-
Move the cursor to select the next folder name and
press <return>

At the end press q
to quit pine
-
Press y
to confirm quit
After this steps you will find a copy of all the OpenVMS mail folders in
the unix environment, and you will access them with pine on the unix environment
or with an internet browser (like Netscape Messenger) via imap protocol.
