Sensitive measurement of forces at the micron scale using atomic quantum gases Abstract
A gas of fermionic potassium atoms is cooled to
quantum degeneracy (10nK) and then trapped in a vertical optical
lattice.
The sample performs (Bloch) oscillations on a micrometric scale with a frequency depending on the external force applied to the atoms. It will discussed how the "atomic sensor" can allow the measurement of Casimir forces and of limits to possible exotic forces. The dynamics of fermionic system will be compared with that of a trapped Bose Einstein condensate. |
